Art ought to be from life, and above life. To merely document surfaces is not enough: I want to grasp what is behind, which to me is far more compelling and worthwhile.

Frances Elson – Somis, CA

My professional career(s) over the past thirty years certainly speaks for my willingness to re-invent myself. Beginning with a Masters Degree in Social Work, I worked as a clinical therapist, then as an administrator (both in Michigan). Then a move to upstate New York led me to teaching at the State University of New York. After my husband, Ed, and I settled in Ventura, California I taught Social Work at UCSB extension and did some clinical work but finally gave in to my love of architecture and design. True to my character, I jumped into that world at the retail furniture level while learning about the field of interior design. In 1975 I opened my design studio, soon tested to qualify as a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers, and ultimately opened Gold Coast Design Center, a resource for other designers in the area. In the meantime my daughter Cheri had given us the gift of two incredible grandchildren, Jonathan and Tari, and I had become very involved in volunteer work. It was clear to me that the time had come for another change, so, in 1998, when my fabulous husband and I moved to our own little paradise in Somis, I felt the time had come to add some fine art activity to my life.  Maybe the interior designer in me demands that I “redocorate”  my life every now and then.  Wouldn’t want to get bored!

Having always loved any art form involving glass, and having wished often that I had the time and opportunity to pursue this passion, I finally took the plunge into classes and, after an introductory class at Focus on the Masters in Ventura, California, I was smitten!  I enrolled for a four-day class at Pacific Art Glass in Los Angeles and never looked back.  Thank goodness for my husband, Ed, who has always been supportive and who truly challenged me to “just do it”. So here I am, another incarnation of Fran as Frances Elson – glass artist !

Richard Heinsohn – Nashville, TN

Richard studied painting and drawing at The University of Georgia in Athens, GA and received his B.F.A. as well as a solo show there at U.G.A.’s Lamar Dodd Fine Art Gallery in 1984. He moved to New York City in 1986 and lived and worked there for fifteen years. He has shown repeatedly in group shows at Allan Stone Gallery, most notable of which was the Summer Group Show of 1995 where he was included along with Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Eva Hess, Richard Estes, Robert Ryman and other notable artists. Allan Stone collected several of Heinsohn’s paintings.

Richard currently has a studio in Nashville TN. In 2007 he received the ” Critic’s Pick ” fromThe Nashville Scene for his solo exhibit at Estel Gallery in Nashville which included fourteen paintings. He was featured in The Tennessean for this exhibit. In 2010 his work was shown at Preston Contemporary Art Center in New Mexico and at The Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, GA and featured in Nashville Arts Magazine. He is currently represented by The Lowe Gallery and his installation, “Postcards to the Future”, a show of twenty paintings, was on view at The Nashville Arts and Business Council during the Fall of 2012. Recently Richard has participated in The Landfill Art Project, creating three-dimensional work from refuse for an international exhibition. Also in 2013 a photographic image of  “Gravity Seven”, a large painting, was projected onto a skyscraper in New York City. His works have now been widely collected.

Richard teaches painting and drawing at Watkins School of Art Design and Film as well as for the Art Embrace children’s program sponsored by the Y.M.C.A. He was recently selected to teach a workshop at Cheekwood Art and Gardens in Nashville on the “Modern Masters” abstract painting exhibition from the Smithsonian, and to teach at The Frist Center for Visual Art on American painting from The Phillips Collection. Richard has also worked closely with refugee children from Burma, Egypt and Nepal, teaching painting as part of after-school enrichment programs, R.I.S.E. and N.A.Z.A., which are provided by support from the city of Nashville.
