Vickie Vainionpaa

My artistic practice includes both painting and sculpture, although I consider myself primarily a painter. I am inspired by contrasting relationships that exist in both our inner and outer worlds, creating artwork that examines the nature of duality. My work is an ongoing investigation into the connections between chaos and order, science and spirituality, and nature and technology. In my paintings, I arrange these seemingly opposite ideas into one harmonious whole. I often pair organic, geological or cloud-like forms with linear, geometric and synthetic forms to blur the boundaries between these dichotomies. There is a constant fluctuation between atmospheric and graphic, abstract and figurative, and quiet and chaotic. I also employ a range of digital tools alongside traditional and painterly materials to synthesize both machine and craft into the process of abstraction.
My work questions the ways in which these contrasting ideas are fundamentally connected. Does modern technology hinder or encourage our capacity for spiritual enlightenment? Where does the natural world end and the material world begin? What are the basic individual truths that connect every culture, philosophy, and religion of the world? My artwork does not strive to reveal an ultimate truth; rather, it questions whether an ultimate truth can really exist in today’s world.

Vickie Vainionpaa (1992) is an emerging artist from Ontario, Canada. Her current practice primarily includes painting and sculpture. She holds a B.A Honors with Studio Art Specialization from the University of Waterloo. Her recent exhibitions include Fresh Paint, New Construction at Art Mûr (Montreal, QC) and YES! at UWAG (Waterloo, ON). She has won many creative awards such as the Liz Edwards Memorial Award, the University of Waterloo’s Excellence award for Sculpture, and was named SoFA’s Most Dedicated to her Practice.
