“….For Annette van Betlehem, a quixotic and invigorating disregard for the horizon line liberates the forms of the nature. Gravity is defeated.”
from Davis, Jill (2010) Catalogue essay In Suspect Terrain Burnie Regional Gallery 2011

“…In a state where the environment is sacrosanct and there are many artists who laud it, Annette van Betlehem’s lightsome/darksome painterly perceptions of nature have a uniqueness…”
from Selby, Clyde (2009) ‘Perceptions of Pure Nature.’ Mercury Magazine, 12 December

Born Annette Helen van Betlehem, Hobart Tasmania. Her career started in Window Dressing and Set Design from her Hobart Studio 15 yrs: both within the Fashion industry and the Theatre; before studying Fine Arts and relocating to the isolated west coast of Tasmania.
From its deep red mountains to the lush rainforest, the Tasmanian west coast landscape continues to inspire the paintings. In her 10 years of professional practice, van Betlehem has explored the Wilderness landscape through Oil on Canvas.

The catalogue of Colori Dell’Anima at Galleria 360 in Florence, Italy Nov. 2015 described van Betlehem’s technique as “hyperrealist” meaning that the paint is applied to replicate the processes of Nature, using thickly applied texture layer on layer, with saturated and full bodied colours.

“…..the painting of the Australian artist creates a new sense of reality, where Nature, absolute protagonist, becomes an eschatological means of purification and discovery. Annette van Betlehem seems to dip the brush directly into the primal force that dominates the world and, through delicate and subtle textures of lighting effects, intense and evocative colours, creates an enveloping atmosphere that invites to an inner silence…”
