A new, older artist, John Garland brings the perspective of decades of travel, family, friends, love as well as social and political concerns to his representational oil paintings, drawings, and photography. Family at work, play, and growing together is a main theme, and his figures often express delight and love. His work often catches a surprising glimpse of beauty in both nature and city-scapes from his travels – or portrays just a surprising glimpse at an environmental or a political subject. He approaches subjects representationally, often synthesizing elements of classical art, contemporary images and his own photography.
