Stephen Spiller - 10 Art Competition
I work and live in Long Island City, New York My work reflects who I am: a heterosexual, white, male with LGBTQIA sensibilities; a Democrat and capitalist influenced by socialist ideas; appalled by racial prejudice, identity politics, mixing church and state, climate change deniers, economic disparity, the absence of universal healthcare, anything denying women control over their lives, the lack of affordable, quality education, gun violence and the NRA, and more. To express my ideas I combine my photographs, as well as work I have recontextualized from other arenas, such as the internet, print publications, etc. with text and digital manipulation, employing humor, satire, emotionally charged words, and other figurative language techniques. I am particularly wary of argumentative and dogmatic expression, preferring to present ideas in a provocative manner. My current project is titled “The Fat Man Sings”. The work is intended to suggest that the means and methods of acquiring power by our U.S. government kleptocrats are actually seeding its achilles heel which I define as the constant bleeding of doubt, anxiety, fear and anger from both the elected and the electorate. My position is that the Trump administration is feckless, and its political prestidigitation is swimming in ever shallower water and poised to run aground. For those two reasons, and others, marginalized women and non-white minorities are presented with an unparalleled opportunity as change agents to voice resistance redefining the definition of, and rearranging the structure of, power in U.S. government affairs. Over the past 10 years, I have participated in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions, both in the United States and internationally. Often my participation resulted from being selected in a juried competition. A brief sample locating my exhibiting experience follows. United States: New York, NY; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; Miami Beach, FL; Nacogdoches, Texas; Bedminster, New Jersey; Attleboro, Maine; Lexington, VA; University Park, PA; Portland, OR; Providence, RI; Minneapolis, MN; Tyler, TX and more.
