You Don’t Look Crazy

“You look slutty.” “You look bitchy.” “You look lazy.” “But you don’t look crazy.”

I’ve been asked these questions by friends, by co-patients in a psychiatric hospital, even by cops. In our culture, mental illness “explains” mass murder to celebrity deaths to everyday cruelty, but little else. Everyone “knows” artists are crazy, but what does crazy-as-art look like? Though I haven’t cut off my ear, it takes bolts of lightning and secret recipes to coax thoughts along the paths in my head. I am a crazy artist.

“You Don’t Look Crazy” sculpturally combines weaving and illustration. Weaving is inspired by mania, depression, and everything in between. My hand-drawn images in response to the weaving are manipulated digitally, printed on fabric, then combined with the fabric into sculptures.

This collection will bring a greater appreciation of weaving and give an insight to mental illness.

“You Don’t Look Crazy” will consider how crazy isn’t always crazy.

Juliet Martin has a BA in Visual Arts from Brown University, a MFA in Computer Art from the School of Visual Arts, and is a member of the Saori Leadership Committee based in Osaka, Japan. Juliet has been a part of the fiber community for 7 years having solo shows including Chashama, New York City; the Sumei Multidisciplinary Arts Center, NJ; Creative Arts Workshop, CT; Garrison Art Center, NY; Artworks Gallery, NJ; and Saori Kaisak Gallery, Osaka, Japan.
