BIO – Corrie van der Wath (April 2020)

Van der Wath’s passion for collecting art spurred the desire in 2005 to undertake art as a hobby for self-expression.

His fulfilling journey evolved significantly in 2019 when he commenced mentorship under Dr Elfriede Dreyer, Professor Extraordinarius. This introduction to the broader spectrum of art concepts and history created the opportunity for Van der Wath to express himself through experiences in his world of business, engineering, and psychology. The artist holds formal qualifications in these disciplines and has completed several short courses in contemporary art.

During 2020 the artist has been recognised in various international competitions (www.corrievanderwath.com)

Van der Wath currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he is part of a young democracy in the search of identity in an environment reflecting cultural diversity, divisive politics, inequality, and business hustle.

Artist Statement

‘Nothing in the outer world has meaning, until the inner world defines it! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Our inner world allows us to creatively romanticize life amidst harsh realities, creating our unique story. Triggered by events that have a profound impact on us, my art is an interpretation of how these events influences our thinking and identity. Art allows us to communicate through our images to others, giving them something to reflect and treasure as their own. I love it when people find themselves in the art I create.

The technique I practice in producing art is heavily influenced by impressionism and abstract art concepts, created by manipulating oils, acrylics and ink through splashing, painting, spraying, and flowing.’
