Featured Artist Michael Costello – Boston, MA @michaelcostelloartist “La commedia e finita,” i.e. “The comedy is finished,” is the closing line of Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci”. The story of the tragic comic protagonist Pagliacci is a traveling clown who murders his wife Nedda and her lover in the final scene when he discovers that he is cuckolded. My current body of work aka La Commedia e Finite” explores our relationships with the icons of clowns, jesters and fools and their unique and mirrored relationships with the individual and society. We are all fools and we all wear masks and we are all socially guarded. “La Commedia e Finita” explores the persona beneath the mask. Clowns in various states of repose and undress allow us enter the persona off the stage. These clowns whose employ this are based on their ability to make us laugh at life, collapsing into their own private world of despondency and mental fatigue. The 21st century Pierrot becomes a melancholic personality experiencing ill luck but who never loses hope. His makeup gives him a sameness which hides his individual soul and its ups and downs from society. Though all of them share the visual homogeneity of Pierrot, they are individual in gender, race, orientation, age and soul. As Pagliacci is about to commit his crime he cries out “Non! Pagliacci non son!”, “I am not Pagliacci!”, reminding us that we are all more than we appear on the outside. While attracted to various expressions of love for art, over the years the medium choice was made because of space or time limitations. An early retirement from the corporate world and a move to a larger home gave me the opportunity to explore Raku Sculptural Ceramics. I fell in love with the balance of technique and serendipity. I loved pushing the limits of the clay and the Raku process. It is a passionate technique! After 15 years and wanting to learn something new I saw an artist exploring the color field movement and fluid acrylics. I was hooked. Fluid Acrylics on a manipulated canvas became the new passion. By manipulating un-stretched canvas and layering the mixed paint just right, the results are bold, big and powerful. Again, the balance of technique and serendipity create one of a kind, joyful works of art. I call my version of this technique, “Fluid Dimensions”. Since starting this type of art expression, “Summer Solstice Rose” won a 2nd place prize in American Art Awards and an honorable mention in Fusion Art 2018 Artist Choice Awards. “Purple Rain” won a 4th place award in American Art Awards and three other works were finalist in the Fusion Art Competition. You spend time figuring out where you’d like to end up..what you’d like to see and do along the way. This all takes awhile because as you see where the route takes you..you keep changing your mind as to what you’d like to experience and explore. You ready the vehicle,pack what you think you will need..and start to head out. Just before you leave the driveway, a friend asks can he get a ride part way?…ahhh ok. Trip just got more complicated. Now you have to be social. You adjust your thinking and settle in. Colors are nice, the road is smooth, signs are helpful. Many side trips and stoping to fix the van( you forgot to pack tools) occur..but you start to forget the destination .. instead enjoying the ride. It never really mattered where you were going anyway.
