Featured Artist – Chenyi Sun

Chenyi Sun (1991, Shanghai, China). He has studied painting for many years. He is skilled at oil painting, water media, acrylic, sketch, pastel, printmaking, mixed media.Sun is using artistic languages to present his perception of a three-dimensional world in a two-dimensional picture while at the same time expressing ideas surrounding the feeling of isolation and loneliness. He is interested in exploring the relationship between people and the world in which they live. Relationships are always complicated, and everyone has their own perspective on the world and their relationship to it. Through isolation, He explore the sincerest version of the person inside. He found that using different reflections of mirrors and glass helps to increase space. The rooms or spaces he paints a narrow world where the feeling of isolation can be exaggerated. Whether alone at home or a crowded subway car, people can feel equally isolated. Meanwhile, most of his work will connect time and space to contrast the feeling of isolation between vagueness and reality. He presents this movement in his subway series.

A photo, a fingerprint, a signature, and DNA are all methods we use to identify a person, but they are just a means to match a name or face to an individual, not to describe who they are or to translate their identity.

This work is a series of updated versions of The Penitent Magdalene. It is a study of sorrow, shame, seduction, sensuality and sadness. They are other-worldly, suggesting a religiousness but with fractal tattoos of sensual vixens [or are they saints?] and bilateral symmetry often witnessed in churches. These are all digital, built with digital photography, fractal, flame and painting software, printed on metallic paper on plexiglas. Each of these draws from the Magdalenes of Titian, LaTour, Perugino and Caravaggio.

Figuration is part of the pareidolia of our human perception, when we see clouds or plants with faces, they are the recognition of our being in nature. Therefore, this is my sense of figurative art.
The two paintings I am submitting, represent two ancestral aboriginal plants that appear as human beings when they are seen. And also I am submitting two portraits of our Earth planet, called IRÍRIA by the bribri aborigins and the other one, SULARÄ SEED GIRL, called like that by the cabecar aborigins, both from my country Costa Rica.

Since the focal point of any environment is not the art but the viewer – everything I create begins with filling my mind and heart with the cares of specific people looking for comfort and encouragement.

I am a self-taught artist & have been a serious artist since the age of 8 years old with a focus on pencil & digital drawings and acrylic & oil paintings, but I work with other mediums as well including computer graphics & minor video editing & production. My purpose as an artist is to share, convey, & recreate the love and passion that I feel in whatever the subject matter is that I am working with. Through the creation of art, one is able to explore one’s passions, perhaps creating inspiration & the drive within others to strive for their own goals.
Always continually striving to learn & improve my craft, I work with all kinds of subject matters, but my main specialty focuses on animals & nature. I have always loved animals since very young, & I feel their spirits and souls which I love being able to convey thru my art. My artwork is available throughout Ventura & LA counties, online thru my website, online vendors, & social media, & as far away as 2 Kung Fu schools in China.
