I LIKE TO NOTICE THINGS: patterns of cracks on the street, colors of sprinkles scattered across the white icing on a doughnut, the texture of peeling bark. I try to use my brush to capture the tension between patterns, colors, and textures. If I am successful, those who view my work will feel the same joy I feel when creating it. As a self taught artist I have spent over 20 years exploring painting and wood sculpting. My work is abstract featuring bright colors, unusual geometric shapes, and various textures.

I re-met painting at the height of a long career as Psychoanalyst, but it was a much older and earlier love: perhaps the first. As a girl I was practicing in the studios of artists, but then my life took a different path and for many years I worked in Psychosomatic Medicine, discovering the links between mind and body and the roots of physical and mental well-being. In addition to clinical practice I published many books, wrote hundreds of articles and conducted courses, and I still do, but my love for painting continued to re-emerge in other forms, driving me to explore the symbolic meaning of colours and their psycho-physical effects in the environments in which we live (a topic on which I published the book “Il colore in casa” Ed. Feltrinelli). So finally I decided to registered to the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera and graduated in Painting completing my studies.

Painting at its best for me is pure self expression. It’s a practice of letting go and allowing something to flow through me and onto the page. People have always said that my work feels alive which is exactly how I experience them- both during my process and after. Because the various elements I work with are fluid I’m able to continuously manipulate the flow, color and structure which leaves me feeling like I’m actually collaborating with the elements to create each piece. Whether I’m using encaustics, pigmented alcohol inks, acrylics or resin-I try my best to keep myself in unison with them…And if I am quiet and listen closely the paintings talk to me.

Having graduated from Parsons School of Design in 83′, the rebirth of figuration and expressionism became influential to me as it was to so many of the same generation. Painters from Thomas Nozkowski to Tadanori Yokoo, as well as earlier artists such as Leon Kossoff, Forrest Bess and Philip Guston have also helped in establishing an aesthetic direction. Painting is a tactical experience involving a myriad of ideas, approaches and fundamentally problem solving at its base. Although modest in size, the use of color, form and gesture are tools utilized to generate a feeling of scale.

Featured Artist – Lee Lessem

Lee Lessem is an abstract expressionist painter who is constantly excited by every nook and cranny in our lives that we see but most often don’t notice. Born on a farm in Africa and surrounded by the magnificence of natural beauty, painting has always been a medium for the artist to test the tension between the real and the abstract – what we perceive and that which truly exists. Lessem’s artworks have a delicate balance between fluidity and structure, softness and vitality, transparency and solidity, and mystery and clarity. Through her practice, the artist visualizes the entanglements of our everyday life and soft and beautiful nature that surrounds us. Lessem hopes to inspire people to look more carefully at the world around them and to discover beauty in all the unusual places. Lessem’s works can be found in private & public collections across North America, the United Kingdom, Australia, Southern Africa & Canada. She recently exhibited her works at NGA Art Show, Liberty Market Loft Gallery, TOAE Exhibition and Covernotes Coffee House; as well, her works were featured several times in ArtAscent International Art & Literature Journal.
