Han Wen Zhang

A high school artist passionately addicted to soft pastels, I’m also continuously looking to experiment with new techniques and mediums. This series is part of my experience with acrylic paints.

The central idea of my artwork is food. I wanted to depict the different relationships food has come to have with people. Food as an representation of leisure and comfort is shown by the popcorn painting. On the other end of the spectrum, food can act as a tool to facilitate a lifestyle, as in the ramen/instant noodles painting. Finally, food can also be the embodiment of culture and tradition as it is taught by the elderly to the young in my final painting. My ultimate message is that that food can bear a much greater purpose than its apparent one of nutrition.I employed a warm color palette to capture the warmth given by food. In the end, the variety of food and the range of experience from them reveal that food is an embodiment of life and its diversity. It is then no wonder that I find myself helplessly attracted to every bit of it.
