Artist Portfolio Magazine’s 10 Art Competition
Victoria Pitel – South Lismore, Australia
By employing the figure as a map to human experience, the body is an endless source of inspiration, connecting place, time, memory and history. Clay offers me an insight into deeper physiological elements of human conditions as I aim to create compositions that lead us to re-evaluate our perceptions.
Traditional ceramic techniques are used to construct the forms, juxtaposing some with found objects, whilst others I balance preciously on timbers, creating tension between endurance and extinction. These works merges the old and new, the historic and the current, with inspiration stemming from ancient terracotta toys, children’s literature and shared childhood experiences; whilst linking global environmental issues. Through this work I hope to open dialogue of; What is it exactly, that our next generations will inherit?
