Zel Brook – Anniversary Art Exhibition

Zel Brook is a female artist who lives and makes art in Oregon. Her artwork deals with the limits of human ability and disability, perception and alterations in perspective. Zel Brook works in several different media, including photography, sculpture, painting, and mixed media. Her work tends to be interdisciplinary, combining aspects of all of these. She has a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts and an MFA from the University of Arizona, and is a recipient of an Oregon Arts Commission Career Opportunity Grant, as well as a Ford Family Foundation Grant.

“Round Barn Roof” reflects changes in vision and interacts with perspective and memory. In this artwork of 20+ hand collaged photos, the perspective is changed from worm’s eye looking up underneath the roof to bird’s eye, creating space from memory looking down at a plant outside of the barn. The plant memory and creation of new space is completed with numerous photographs I took and made into a different object. The finished artwork is then hung vertically, changing the orientation again.

“Horseshoe Barn Roof” references all of the above and adds a reference for the previous use of the barn for horses.

“Three-Beam Barn Roof” represents how my vision presents doubles and triples the same image.

“Pinwheel Barn Roof” references air movement and wind coming into the barn.
