Artist Portfolio Magazine – 2017 Q4 Art Competition
Joel Libby – College Place, WA
Born in 1979, Joel was raised in and around the fruit and nut orchards of Central California. Those early years under the intense California sun instilled in him a love of bright, saturated colors. Joel holds a B.A. in fine art from Walla Walla College and an M.F.A. in Illustration from The Academy of Art University. Much of his Thesis work was spent studying and emulating the early illustrative styles of artist such as Howard Pyle and N.C. Wyeth. Upon completion of his degree, Joel’s work gravitated back to the bright colors of his youth. Joel refers to his work as “painterly pop art”. Painterly because of the bold and often times violent brushwork. Pop art because of the influence of artists such as Warhol and Lichtenstein, specifically the use of bright colors and bold imagery. Joel now lives in Southeastern Washington with his family.
