Norlam De Leon

Was born the 1st of October of 1981, at the province of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Participated in creation’s workshop at the Provincial Culture House and took classes with the self-taught painter, a friend of his family, Humberto Cuervo, committedly starting within the world of the Fine Arts, showing a remarkable interest in drawing and painting.

In the year of 2003 began his studies at the Provincial School of Arts Benny More and meet his teacher on the History of the Art and friend Mario Guerra, who helps him to understand the beginning of a new vision of the art through the esthetic, beyond the use of the academic resources, perfecting the training of the work, stimulated by the traditional order of the Fine Arts, with the subjectivity in some of the new universal tendencies, from the first and second halves of the XX century. Was graduated with honors (Distinguished Graduated) in the subject of painting at the year of 2007. During his social service at the Provincial Council of Plastic Arts and the Graphic Society of Cienfuegos, deeply familiarizes with the technic of engraved and worked as a teacher of graphic shape ate the above-mentioned school of arts since the year 2008 up to 2013.

Made personal and collective expositions in Cuba and Venezuela, participated at the provincial shows 5th of September, Show of the City, Show of the Sea, and the famous National- International Show “Visuarte”, where the continuous search of his own language as a creative, originates his progressive interest in the establishment of a close relationship between the engraved and painting. Arrives to the United States at the year of 2013 and shows his work in some collective shows, private collections and the permanent collections of the Patricia & Phillip Frost Florida International University at the city of Miami.

The combination of the engraved and painting carried his to establish the inseparable interrelation between shape and content, which has covered his artistic work until the present.

In the immense custom of stablishing a work of questions and answers with the “reality”, the questions are imperative. The answers all the time come with the living advancement of a host of experiences that may give an ambiguous consent of the existence. This happens when I admire the “Rocks”, because they are elements that have always determined the spiritual and the material development of our history, reflect the human’s thought, from the most rough and organic surfaces, up to the most sophisticated architectural masks of the contemporariness. However, the technology has sculpted the rules of almost all our futuristic life projects, and in the artistic commitment I like to leave a continuous dialog between the primitive shape of the rocks, as a recognizable image, and the complex behavioral methods of the technologically civilized human. Is used the language of the abstraction as the existential “Veil” within the recognition of the present, from the side of the society entertained in the “Progress”, and the simple, but ambitious spirituality of a “Megalithic” monument.

In its most traditional complex, the engraved is a tool, which (if wanted), promotes the conceptual serialization of the shape, a multiple image, a manner of expressing the persistent subjectivity. But, through molds of the relief engraved, drawing and painting, I prefer to promote the exercise of “allude to”, of point to the ways that start from a unique image, suitable to itself, very independent. I do not pretend to establish a generalized critique of the contemporariness, neither a worship to its complexity, but a subtle educative suggestion to reflection about the moral need of the calm and the human genesis. I put up a work, based in many themes, a stone work which narratess or show names, objects, spaces, shapes, habits, attitudes.
