Edu Viana – Anniversary Art Exhibition

Born in 1989 in Bahia, Brazilian’s heart of African historical influences, young artist Edu Viana has begun his career working on drawings and paintings that portray the imagetic universe of his homeland. Afrikamerika series of artworks blends figurative and abstract traits in one single authentic language, where colour’s role stands out. Viana takes Carybe’s synthetic gestures on Bahia’s root themes as a starting point within the ethos of that same colourful world.

While graduating in the University of Sao Paulo Architecture Faculty (2012), Viana deepens his relationship with art and its history, while his research continues towards the field of colour, treating it as a character on its own in his Self-portraits series of paintings.

Nowadays, in his Watered gouache series he performs a sequence of work procedures involving elements as gouache ink, water, a surface in glass, air and gravity, thus expanding Pollock’s embracing of random in a game of new variables. Viana then levels the roles played by artistry and nature in the making of an artwork, especially by exploring relations between artistic intent and fluke in a place where control meet its lack, a space-time frame where will and chance are free to dance with one another.
