Verónica Madrid-Malo – Portraits Art Exhibition

Colombian since july 6th of 1990. I studied arts and literature at Universidad de los Andes, (Bogotá, Colombia) but I didn’t finish literature. My emphasys was in the area of plastic arts and my main interest are drawings; that doesn’t mean I abandonned painting, however, maybe we are “fighting” momentanously. In my process, I draw to bring my thoughts into life. It’s a synchrony between observation and imagination. Illustration doesn’t have to be typecasted as an inherent product of design. For me, an image is capable of giving a visual world to words… The prolongation of the existence of mental stories.
In my work, words remain through images. My “purpose” is rather selfish, I draw to try to understand myself, taking emotions and experiences, mixing realities. I’m a hundred percent symbolic, specially attracted for the tricks the mind plays on the world that surrounds us.
(Bestiario) was my first serial project and the culmination of my life as an undergraduate, and in turn, it was the beggining of my consolidation as an artist (a very tough and long road that I´m just walking trough). In my work I explore the importance of the connection that exists between symbolgy and significance, linking these elements with my life experiencies, memories and people, also making from the surreal grounds a stable space inside my own instability. In almost everything I do, birds in general are present, they are my obsession. I firmly believe that everyone of us should do mental journeys to our childhood and discover that from innocence we can find our forgotten truths. I also believe in the power of imagination as a source of relief or condemn.

Right now, I´m working on perfectioning my personal style, I´m practicing again the use of pencil and graphite for some creations, because I don´t want to fall into the comfort zone of custom. I need to evolve, I need to be better, not for the “fame”, not for recognition, not for the sales; I need it, just for my personal connection with myself and the outside world.
I think that artists has some personal obligations with their labor: to learn daily, to be constant, to respect the profession, to be humble, to never take for granted anything, and to learn how to embrace failure, because well, at some point everybody does fail, and it doesn´t matter, it´s part of the path; failure is in fact, the master of success, sometimes.
