Kathy Curtis Cahill – Artist Portfolio Magazine

A portrait is an artistic interpretation of a person in which the face and its expression are the dominant features. My mannequin portraits grew out of a larger body of work involving cultural representations of the ideal female in window displays. Mannequins are as varied as the many personas women can adopt; they mimic stereotypes of femininity presented to us through the use of commercial advertising and marketing. I focus on the ones that express a singular degree of individuality, having very realistic facial features and hair. They sell more than clothing, they typify attitude and seem eerily life-like with their emotive expressions. These portraits are mirrors of ourselves in some odd way, and yet seem to possess an emotional life of their own.
