Sue Miller – Artist Portfolio Magazine

Sue Miller creates captivating realistically detailed oil paintings of places she encounters around the world. As we view her scenes, she arouses our senses and encourages us to discover shapes, colours and reflections of light on natural and man-made objects. Inspired by places she has visited, she captures the effect of light on colours and forms as witnessed all over the globe. Moved by fleeting moments of time as well as transformation, her work reflects themes such as one day turning into the next, or a historic city in the midst of great change.

Miller’s main focus is urban landscapes and she excels at recreating the unique colour, characteristics, and cultural aspects of the locale she visits. Taking time to mix colours to achieve the ideal hue and tone, she explains, “For me, painting provides a total break from reality, by immersing my energies, thoughts, and complete focus into the time and place of the work’s subject. Painting has helped me to indulge in a deeper mindfulness while visiting new locations around the world. This has allowed me to better absorb and appreciate the full experience of what I have seen, heard, and felt—to more fully perceive and understand each unique and inspiring place.”

The artist received her art education at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto with a focus on communication and design. She primarily works in oil, referencing photographic source material while using skills of the representational artist. Sue has been juried into many exhibitions including recently: the Society of Canadian Artists Large Works exhibition, Manhattan Arts International New Beginnings show, as well as being invited to participate in Whitby’s Keeping It Real exhibition, just to name a few. She is an elected member of the Society of Canadian Artists and also enjoys her membership in the Whitby Station Gallery, PineRidge Arts Council, and the Oshawa Art Association. She is also a proud member of the Rotary Club of Whitby Sunrise.
