STATEMENT
Mixed media collage is the creative vehicle I use to express and organize my ideas, emotions and surroundings. I use a variety of subjects in my work including abstracts, interiors, still life, portraiture, and nature.
For my work I use handmade papers, found papers, tissue paper, magazine clippings, newspaper, wallpaper, photo transfers, acrylic paint, and fragments of my original drawings and paintings. Then I alter, rip, cut, edit and rearrange them to create a seamless whole. The papers are adhered with acrylic mat medium and the completed collage is coated with acrylic varnish which seals, protects, and serves to unify the collage elements.
Contrast is achieved, not only through a range of values, but through the juxtaposition of torn edges with cut edges, and transparency with opacity.
I take the disparate elements, textures and images and reinvent them by altering and reconfiguring them in unexpected ways. The process is both intuitive and driven by composition, design, and pattern.
