My paintings explore the issues of abuse of power and control, information, mercury and mythology. The misuse of the element mercury began at the end of the 15th century and its misuse continues today. The paintings are flawed, blurry or broken to show both seen and unseen Layers of paint serve as a metaphor for centuries of power struggles. The maps are visual metaphors for identity, politics and propositions. Maps are one of the oldest ways of nonverbal communication and are a way of telling a story. A map is a lie, a beautiful lie, a subjective act of selection. Global dismemberment, navigation and imperialism can all be seen on a map. The paintings speak to emotion over reason and seek to articulate our place in society and the world.
