2014 Realism Art Exhibition – MyArtContest.com
Jose Enrique Portas – Rochester, NY
I feel that paintings should challenge what we perceive as normal, true or real. They should transport the viewer to a new realm where up may be down, right may be left…or wrong. Achieving this should elicit a certain amount of confusion and uneasiness. It speaks to the fact that the artist is, in essence, a performer who paints a stage, tells a story or reveals new truths. As an artist, I wish to develop and experiment with my understanding of the boundaries that entrap and distort mankind’s historical view and vision of the future.
The interchange of worlds in one’s imagination creates an inexplicable passage where the “real” becomes “surreal” and a new dimension is created. My work is often based on events from my life as well as historical events.
